A categorial grammar of Spanish auxiliary chains

چکیده

Spanish auxiliary sequences as in Juan puede haber tenido que estar empezando a trabajar hasta tarde ‘Juan may have had to be starting work until late’, traditionally termed chains, two properties that are not naturally captured phrase-structure approaches syntax: (i) they follow no priori fixed order; permutations different meanings, none of which is any more basic than other (cf. trabajando working’ and está pudiendo currently able work’); (ii) the syntactic semantic relations established within chain go beyond strict monotonicity or cumulative influence; rather, present kinds distinct local domains. We show an alternative syntax grounded modification categorial grammar introduced Ajdukiewicz (1935) closely follows Montague (1973), Dowty (1978, 1979, 2003), Schmerling (1983a, b, 2019) provides effective tools for subsuming chains explicit explanatory grammar.

A Dynamic Categorial Grammar

We present a compositional, dynamic categorial grammar for discourse analysis that captures the core insights of dynamic semantics: indefinites do not quantify but introduce discourse referents; definites are anaphoric to previously-mentioned discourse referents; discourse referents have their ‘lifespan’ limited by certain operators. The categorial grammar formalism we propose is strongly lexic...

Categorial Grammar

The paper is a review article comparing a number of approaches to natural language syntax and semantics that have been developed using categorial frameworks. It distinguishes two related but distinct varieties of categorial theory, one related to Natural Deduction systems and the axiomatic calculi of Lambek, and another which involves more specialized combinatory operations. Comments University...

Constraint-Based Categorial Grammar

We propose a generalization of Categorial Grammar in which lexical categories are defined by means of recursive constraints. In particular, the introduction of relational constraints allows one to capture the effects of (recursive) lexical rules in a computationally attractive manner. We illustrate the linguistic merits of the new approach by showing how it accounts for the syntax of Dutch cros...

Categorial Minimalist Grammar

1. Convergence at first sight, and differences in a second time From the early days of the minimalist program of Chomsky (1993), a convergence with categorial grammars was noticed by Ep-stein and Berwick (1995). The striking similarity lies in the merge operation, which looks like the application rule of the AB grammars. In both cases, word order is a consequence of the consumption rules but in...
